OVERVIEW

Viana do Castelo, in a beautiful area of northern Portugal, stretches along the Lima River where it joins the Atlantic. Once an important port and shipbuilding center, it was one of the main departure ports for the voyages of discovery, becoming an important trading center for sugar and gold from the Portuguese colony of Brazil. Its fame and prosperity were eventually eclipsed by Porto’s rise in importance as a port.

Viana do Castelo came to prominence & prosperity in the 16th century, becoming an important trading port. Queen Maria II’s royal favor led to the creation of a commercial association here in 1852 further contributing to the city’s affluence.
The city is rich in architectural structures from the Renaissance, Manueline, Baroque and Art Deco periods. It is known for its gold filigree work, a craft developed during the time of Moorish occupation.

Its decorative arts museum holds Portugal’s largest collection of typical Azulejo ceramic tiles. Enjoy a day experiencing the history and beauty of this maritime city!
