DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Braga, founded by the Celts, became an important Roman town for its position at the intersection of five Roman roads. The city served as the capital of the Suebe Kingdom in the 5th Century and was already an important Catholic center.Braga’s Diocese, dating from the 3rd Century CE, is one of the Iberian Peninsula’s oldest. Prior to Moorish dominance, the city hosted many religious councils.

Braga’s role as Portugal’s religious capital was established in the 12th century with the granting of an Archbishopric and construction of its cathedral.The unique Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary was commissioned by Braga’s Archbishop in 1722 specifically as a “sacred way” and pilgrimage destination. This beautiful and unusual shrine is much visited each year by the faithful and tourists alike.
