Vistas of a Vanished Age-Shore Excursion

OVERVIEW

The historical centers of both Siena and San Gimignano are UNESCO World Heritage Sites but that’s their only similarity. Siena remained a powerful city state and continued to develop and evolve over the centuries. San Gimignano fell into decline in the mid 14th century due to famine and plague. The result is a shining example of a preserved medieval townscape.

Your personal driver, fully at your disposal for the duration of the excursion, will meet you at the arrivals terminal of the Port of Livorno and carry you, via private air-conditioned vehicle, on a journey to explore these two medieval gems.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Siena, an early banking center and important stop along the travel/pilgrimage route between France and Rome, was a wealthy & powerful city-state which eventually succumbed to its arch-rival Florence, being incorporated into the Duchy of Tuscany. Its proud and powerful history can be seen in its many monuments & masterworks.

A visit to San Gimignano’s historic center is like stepping back in time. The town’s decline in the 14th century led to a lack of further development and later generations consciously strove to preserve its ancient aspect. San Gimignano strongly maintains its feudal atmosphere and, with its tower houses, squares and palaces, provides an outstanding example of a medieval town.
Enjoy discovering the tale of these two medieval cities!
