Lucca has a long and proud history. It was an independent republic to rival that of Venice for over 500 years.  Renowned for its silk cloth, Lucca became rich through the silk trade. You can trace the history of this beautiful town through its architecture as you stroll its streets and squares; discovering charming views typical of Tuscan towns as you wander.
 
Lucca’s famous as the birthplace of composer Giacomo Puccini, writer of operas such as La Bohème and also for its protective walls. In the early 19th century, a wide promenade was created atop the walls, providing lovely views over the countryside and town. Today, it’s a favorite place to walk, cycle or simply sit for residents & visitors alike.
