The City of St. Francis:Assisi

OVERVIEW

Driving southeast from Siena into the neighboring region of Umbria, you’ll reach beautiful Assisi; the town of St. Francis, Italy’s patron saint. This medieval hill town, with roots in Roman times and earlier, appears rose colored from the distance because of the stone type used to construct it. Assisi and the Basilica are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

You’ll enjoy a personalized driving tour in your private, air-conditioned vehicle with the services of an English-speaking driver, entirely at your disposal for the duration of your visit. Your vehicle allows you easy access to all the important sights of this intriguing town.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Assisi is closely associated with St. Francis, being the place of both his birth and his burial. It is here that he founded the Franciscan order.
The Basilica honoring him, one of Italy’s most famous and important pilgrimage destinations, is also visited by art enthusiasts for its beautiful frescoes by artistic giants of the Renaissance such as Giotto and Cimabue.

But Assisi itself is well worth exploring. Beginning at the top of the town, its oldest part, you’ll proceed downward toward the Basilica, visiting lovely sights including: San Rufino Cathedral, Piazza del Comune with its fountain, town hall and church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva -- a former Roman temple to Minerva, enjoying the winding streets and intriguing shops along the way.
