St. Remy de Provence, Les Baux and Arles

OVERVIEW

St. Remy de Provence is a little town located at the bottom of the Alpilles chain and at the edges of the prosperous agricultural region of Chateaurenard.

Les Baux de Provence has a spectacular position in the Alpilles mountains, set atop a rocky outcrop crowned with a ruined castle overlooking the plains to the south.

Arles was a town of considerable importance in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis. The Roman and Romanesque Monuments of Arles were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1981.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

We offer you a private customized tour of the most spectacular sights of St. Remy de Provence, Les Baux de Provence and Arles with our comfortable and air conditioned Sedan/Van departing from the port of Marseille or your hotel. You will have a fluent English speaking Driver who will escort you through the discovery of these charming towns.

Your private tour starts with a stop in St. Remy de Provence. You will enjoy the visit of Clinique Saint Paul where painter Van Gogh stayed after he had mutilated his ear. You can still recognize places around that he represented in his paintings.

The second main highlight of the town is a triumphal arch and a mausoleum still standing at the entrance of the former Greco-roman town. These two masterpieces are considered as one of the roman buildings best preserved.

Your next stop of the day will be in the charming town of Les Baux de Provence, a very picturesque site, in the heart of the Alpilles, perched on a rocky spur 245m high.

The town offers an exceptional cultural heritage of historic monuments such as churches, chateaux, houses, doorways and many other things.

You will continue your private tour with the visit of Arles and enjoy a walking tour among lots of Roman remains, see the amphitheater (where are conducted some bullfights), the theater, the Constantine baths and a part of the wall surrounding the city.

The Dutch post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh lived in Arles in 1888-1889 and produced over 300 paintings and drawings during his time there. Some places he painted in his pictures are clearly recognizable in the town.
