San Gimignano:City of Towers

OVERVIEW

Thrusting heavenward from the crest of a hilltop, San Gimignano’s distinctive skyline, with its 13 towers, dominates the surrounding countryside. These “medieval skyscrapers”, once numbering 72, allowed their owners to watch over their enemies and proclaimed their wealth and power.

This “upward mobility” was halted in 1311when city authorities built the Torre Grossa next to the town hall, proclaiming that no taller tower could be constructed and any existing tower surpassing its height must be reduced.
This private driving tour with an English-speaking driver allows you full access to the sights and squares of this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage site.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

In its heyday, San Gimignano, a self-governed free town, was a main stop along the important Via Francigena. After 1353, the plague, famine, and submission to Florence, caused the town’s decline. Neglect allowed the town to maintain much of its feudal atmosphere and appearance. Today, San Gimignano is nearly as it was in the 14th century.

Unlike many other medieval Tuscan towns, the architecture here is not unique or original, but an eclectic mix of styles borrowed from areas with which San Gimignano came into contact. It’s is an enchanting place to discover: lose yourself along twisting medieval lanes; marvel at the two concentric rings of walls and imposing gateways, and delight in the lovely squares and unexpected delights at every turn.
