The Marais District Walking Tour

OVERVIEW

The Marais District is a fascinating mix of past and present where unique neighborhoods are found. Once the aristocratic district of Paris, due to its proximity to the Louvre Palace, it is also home to Paris's oldest Jewish quarter.

Your private licensed local guide will take you on a walking tour to discover this Parisian gem. You will see some of the many former mansions of the aristocracy and visit Rue des Rosiers in the heart of the Jewish community.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Today, the Marais District is much as it appeared in the 17th century, with its narrow cobbled streets and former mansions of the aristocracy such as the Hôtel de Sully. In fact, the Marais boasts the most intact buildings and streets fron the pre-Revolutionary period. In addition to some of the district's mansions, you'll visit the elegand and tranquil Place des Vosges, the oldest square in Paris.

In the area of Rue des Rosiers is Paris's oldest Jewish quarter which has been in existence since the 13th century. In this street you can find bakeries selling traditional Jewish goods and small kosher restaurants. Nearby, you'll see the Agoudas Hakehilos synagogue by the Art Nouveau architect, Hector Guiard; the only religious building he designed.
