A Tale of two Hill Towns--Cortona & Assisi

OVERVIEW

With this private tour, you’ll visit hill towns in two different regions of Italy: Tuscany & Umbria.
First we’ll journey to Cortona, one of Tuscany’s oldest hill towns. This scenic walled medieval town is famous, among other things, for the book and film, Under the Tuscan Sun.

Next, we’ll take you to Assisi in Umbria; one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Italy for its association with St. Francis, founder of the Franciscan order.
You’ll travel in our comfortable air conditioned vehicles with the services of an English-speaking driver entirely at your disposal for the duration of the visit.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Cortona was established by the Etruscans and much evidence of this civilization is still found in the town today.
The town is predominantly medieval with winding streets & protective walls. You can discover important works by artists such as Fra’Angelico and local sons Luca Signorelli and Pietro da Cortona; then enjoy sweeping views over the breathtaking Val di Chiana to Lake Trasimeno’s emerald waters from Piazza Garibaldi.

Assisi has roots back to Roman times and remnants of that era can still be seen. The town is most famous, however, as the birth and burial place of St.Francis of Assisi. The basilica, built in his honor, is a wondrous treasury of frescoes by artistic giants such as Cimabue and Giotto.
